Horsham, PA –SofterWare, Inc., developer of DonorPerfect Fundraising Software, today announced a strategic partnership with NOZA, Inc., that will enable DonorPerfect clients to access actual giving transactions from NOZA’s database of over 44 MILLION people, companies, and charitable foundation giving records. Starting with the web-based version DonorPerfect Online, DonorPerfect clients will be able to access their donor’s giving information in NOZA with an integrated link. This will enable them to find out whom these donors have given to, and how much they have donated. Plus, they will be able to find new donors by either geographic area or similar mission.

Jon Biedermann, Vice President for SofterWare, Inc. said “We’re thrilled to partner with NOZA and provide our clients integrated access to their huge database of gifts. This valuable, cost effective resource is easy to use, and integrates with their DonorPerfect system with the simple click of a mouse. Our clients will be able to use this data to better target their solicitations and “Ask” amounts. It will also enable to them increase both the quantity and size of their gifts. This is especially important as nonprofits continue to face challenges in this economy.”

Craig Harris, President & CEO of NOZA, Inc. commented “This is a very exciting partnership for NOZA and DonorPerfect, which will greatly impact the major gift fundraising efforts of DonorPerfect’s CRM customers. When I started my fundraising career a dozen years ago at a community nonprofit organization, I was a DonorPerfect customer. It is an honor to continue my longstanding relationship with DonorPerfect now as a strategic partner, helping to bring the latest in technology and actionable data to the desktops of thousands of nonprofits using DonorPerfect’s CRM solutions.”

From that experience, and from my experience as Chairman of the Board of the California Oncology Research Institute, I developed a keen understanding of the expense profile of a typical non-profit.

I recently formed the Non-Profit Purchasing Group to help non-profits save on their most commonly recurring expenses. We’ve negotiated discounts of 20% and more on key items such as office supplies, printing, payroll processing, merchant processing, email marketing, promotional products and more. Unlike other group purchasing organizations that make money by taking commissions, rebates or administrative fees from their vendor partners, we pass through 100% of the savings to our members. We therefore charge our members a nominal fee of $99 per year to join and access these savings.

I encourage you to review our vendor partners list and see the world-class providers with whom we’ve partnered. One of those world class vendors is NOZASEARCH.com, the world’s largest searchable database of charitable donations. Raising money for nonprofit organizations is hard work. The number one reason people donate to charity is because they were asked. This is where NOZA can help: they help charities identify who to ask. With a paid subscription, which is available at discount to NPPG members, nonprofits can access over 43 million individual and corporate donations to U.S. charities to search for prospective donors for their organizations. In addition to NOZA’s award-winning premium webservice, they have also made their database of 1.3 million searchable foundation grants available as a free service, which can be accessed by signing up here.

We will continue to add vendor partners, particularly service providers in every major metropolitan area. I’m sure that all who join will save much more than the registration fee. We even have a savings calculator that you can use to validate the potential savings.

Feel free to call me directly with any questions toll free: 877.THX.NPPG or email http://mailto:dan@nonprofitpurchasinggroup.org.

Sincerely,

Dan Engel, CEO
The Non-Profit Purchasing Group, LLC | www.nonprofitpurchasinggroup.orgDel Mar, CA 92014
O: 858.964.3764 | Toll Free: 877.THX.NPPG | dan@nonprofitpurchasinggroup.org
NOZA Philanthropy Data for Haiti Earthquake Relief

“NOZA supports the large and small nonprofit organizations who are doing everything they can to care for Haiti Earthquake victims, in particular those whose fundraising and administrative budgets are small and where the majority of all funds raised goes to programs and services to support the children and families of Haiti,” says Craig Harris, NOZA founder and CEO.

Major gifts come from three primary sources: (1) Corporations (2) Foundations (3) Individuals. According to the annual GivingUSA Foundation statistics charitable giving in the U.S. topped $307 billion in 2008. Here is where the money came from:
Corporations: $14.5 billion (5%)
Foundations: $41.2 billion (13%)
Individuals: $251.9 billion (82%)

While foundation and corporate giving play a major role in U.S. philanthropy, most of the money comes from people. Having spent several years as a fundraising consultant, I’ve worked with organizations that excelled at major gift fundraising, and I’ve worked with organizations that couldn’t raise a major gift to save their mission. One of the common threads for the successful organizations is that they followed the money, focusing the majority of their time and resources on individuals. Those that failed typically hid behind the relative ease and comfort of shotgun blasting grant proposals and letters to foundations and corporations. In fact, I’m yet to find an organization that was able to develop and SUSTAIN a major gift program from only foundations and corporations. While the relative proportion of individual/corporate/foundation giving will vary from organization to organization, for those just getting started with major gift fundraising, my advice is to focus on individuals.

Why do people give major gifts?

What is the number one reason why people make major gifts to nonprofit organizations? Because they were asked! During my early years as a fundraising professional, I once heard a line during a fundraising workshop that I’ve always remembered: “People don’t give money to causes. People give money to people with causes.” I believe this to be the single most fundamental truth about major gift fundraising. But people-to-people fundraising for major gifts isn’t about just doing a lot of “asks” (although it helps). It is about cultivating relationships with prospective major donors, and engaging them in genuine and meaningful ways with the mission of the organization and its leadership.

Who should be asked for a major gift?

In order to sell an expensive product you must first start with qualified sales leads. In the case of nonprofit major gift fundraising we refer to these sales leads as donor prospects. Major donor prospect lists can be created from two sources: (1) From within your organization’s existing base of annual donors, volunteers, event attendees, and other “friends” of your organization, and (2) From scratch. Whether creating a list of prospects from your existing base of support or building a list from scratch, the process is the same: To identify individuals with both the financial capacity to make a major gift and an inclination to support your particular mission. This identification process requires research, and you’ll need to budget time and resources to conduct the research. Depending on your budget, this research can be done either with or without fee-based research products. To do it without spending a dime (but a lot of time), the two best resources are your board of directors and Google. You can put together a spreadsheet of some of your most promising existing donors and constituents, and distribute this to your board for what is known as peer-review. Essentially, you are asking your board members to comb through a lengthy list of current supporters, and have them indicate who they know, who they are willing to contact, and any information they are comfortable sharing with respect to an individuals’ capacity and inclination. This peer-review process with the board can be preceded with or followed by staff using Google or other free sources to find additional relevant information that helps to shed light on capacity and inclination. For those organizations who can afford to utilize fee-based products to streamline their research, there is a great way to efficently uncover relevant data that even the deepest Google search won’t deliver. The company that I founded, NOZA, has developed one of the most widely used fee-based products to search for major donor prospects. In terms of cost, annual subscriptions to NOZA cost $800/year, but there are a variety of highly discounted packages available through NOZA’s partnership with Techsoup for eligible organizations. To serve as a double disclaimer, I’ll reiterate here that I am the Founder of NOZA.

The goal of your major gift research should NOT be viewed as simply identifying who to solicit, but rather, the goal should be to identify which prospects should be engaged for deeper relationship building. Each organization and each staff and volunteer involved in the major gift fundraising efforts will be limited by a finite number prospects and a finite number of relationships…so focus on those with the greatest known capacity and inclination!

Who is supposed to do the asking?

With the exception of a select few large organizations that lean on staff to do all or most of the face-to-face solicitations, for the rest of us, the participation of the board and other volunteer leaders is absolutely critical for successful major gift fundraising. If you work for an organization whose board members refuse to solicit on behalf of the organization, then you have an uphill battle ahead of you. If that is the case, and depending on your organization’s circumstances, you might want to consider putting off your plans for a full-blown major gift campaign and instead focus on a board development initiative. This is a very sensitive topic for most organizations, but fortunately there are great resources available to assist in evolving your board. One of my favorite resources is BoardSource. Having worked with so many excellent fundraising organizations and an equal number of lousy ones, in my experience success or failure usually boils down to the volunteer leadership. In my opinion, if your non-fundraising board isn’t willing to give personal stretch gifts and take on a few solicitations of their own, well, maybe it’s time to promote those board members to your “honorary board” and then go find some new board members willing to take on the real work of the board.

Conclusion

For most people, including myself, asking for money is uncomfortable and it is hard. It is really hard. And therein lies the reason why so many organizations fail to launch and sustain successful major gift fundraising programs. For many people asking for money is akin to flossing regularly, eating healthy, exercising for 20 minutes a day, and avoiding using our credit cards. We know we should be doing these things but often we don’t. We are predisposed to avoid doing those things that bring us displeasure, discomfort or pain, and asking for money is at the top of the list for most of us. As with flossing, eating healthy and exercising, it takes commitment, discipline, and practice. Sometimes all it takes is thinking about the alternatives to not doing those things. For nonprofits, the alternatives could be downsizing a program, eliminating a program, or closing the doors altogether. Isn’t that enough motivation to put our fears aside and begin the process of starting or improving our major gift programs?

30-Day Subscription for Only $99

Exclusive NOZA discount for nonprofits and public libraries with a budget of a $1 million or less: 30-Day subscription for only $99

TechSoup Limited and NOZA are teaming up to help your organization boost its fundraising efforts with 30 days of unlimited access to the world’s largest searchable database of charitable donations for only $99.
“As business conditions and company strategies evolve, both LexisNexis® and its licensors are obligated to evaluate their business strategy. NOZA, provider of the charitable donations database on LNDP has initiated termination of the license with LexisNexis®. As a result, we are legally obliged to remove this content effective May 17th.”

The statement made today by LexisNexis® is factually correct. NOZA has appreciated working in partnership with LexisNexis® for the past three years.

For those LexisNexis® users who accessed NOZA’s database, direct access is now available through www.NOZAsearch.com. Users will find direct access from NOZA to be loaded with additional features for deeper searching, streamlined viewing, and saving and exporting of records. NOZA focuses on one and only one data source, and our user interface is focused entirely on making your searching and downloading of more than 40 million charitable giving records as efficient and powerful as possible.

The pricing for an annual, unlimited subscription on www.NOZAsearch.com is $800 for the first user, and $500 for additional users. Please contact support@nozasearch.com with any questions, or to request a free trial of our award-winning webservice.

However, after researching www.nozasearch.com , the world's largest database of philanthropic giving information, I can only find concrete evidence of Madoff's charitable giving totaling $3,255,700. Granted, NOZA's database is only a cross-section of charitable giving, and is limited only to donations that have been publicly referenced and acknowledged on the web. But it is the world's largest compilation of known charitable giving, and out of more than 40 million donation records in the database, only 110 of them belong to Bernard Madoff, and they only add up to just over $3,000,000.

The first course is a monthly eLearning newsletter, 15th & Lawson, is focused on “Where’s the money now!?” The subject matter experts are David and Lori Lawson, two people who have been in the fundraising field for years. Future courses will be on a variety of fundraising related topics including prospect management, gift accounting, and change management. Along with David & Lori, there is a great group of people you know and trust who will be Subject Matter Experts for WorkingPhilanthropy.com. Unlike webinars, WorkingPhilanthropy.com is using the latest eLearning technology to create a learning environment where you control the path and pace of your experience. All subscribers are given a private portal to view and manage all of the courses they subscribe to. We talked to David and he said “Lori and I have spent our careers sharing our knowledge and expertise and WorkingPhilanthropy.com provides us an opportunity to do this in a way not possible in a traditional learning environment such as a conference or even a webinar.” Lori pointed out that “Professional development budgets are going to be cut during these extremely difficult times and we hope that WorkingPhilanthropy.com can help to fill the gap by providing effective learning at a price that works.” Definitely a site worth checking out. Membership's Could Be The Answer

The constant search for donors is what prospect researching is all about. A great article about membership's came to my attention recently through www.nonprofitbuzz.org, which by the way is a great source of news and tips for people looking for donors. This particular piece explains the pro's of being and having memberships, some of which are:

1.reaching your target audience
2.getting discounts/benefits with your memberships
3.knowing that you yourself are contributing to a cause that you feel passionate about

Sometimes you have to pay before you can receive.
