The importance of quality fundraising staff
When discussing fundraising, we typically speak of tools, tactics, strategies, etc.- but we often forget how important a quality fundraising staff is. The NonProfit Times has a useful fundraising column called, Don't Tell the Donor, written by an anonymous fundraiser. It's a nice way to get a sneak peak into the world of fundraising through an expert, whose anonymity allows for honest and insightful tips. This week's column focuses on how to recruit, train and most importantly, keep quality staff on board. It's about more than just finding a someone that has years of fundraising experience, says the contributor- it's about actively recruiting and engaging quality candidates.
"Unfortunately, you can be the most selective interviewer on the planet, but if you don’t have quality prospective employees to choose from you aren’t going to build a quality team," says the writer. The column goes on to point out that the best staff are a result of "ambitious and aggressive future bosses who steal employees away from their current job."
I recommend reading the entire column; the writer also gives excellent advice on training and retaining quality employees, which will ultimately boost fundraising and allow for innovative ideas to thrive.
