Indiana University celebrates its first graduating class of doctoral students of Philanthropic Studies
Here’s some great news from Indiana University- according to a University press release, the first four people in the U.S. to graduate with a doctorate in Philanthropic Studies will soon graduate from its Center on Philanthropy.
This is an exciting step for the non-profit sector! According to the release, university programs in philanthropy and nonprofit management have significantly grown in recent years, creating a rising need for new faculty. These first graduates will be educating the future of non-profit leadership and helping create even stronger and more effective philanthropists joining this ever-important workforce.
The Center researches and writes Giving USA, the annual yearbook on giving, for the Giving USA Foundation. It has conducted research on high net-worth donors’ giving for Bank of America and about online giving for American Express. NOZA has assisted the Center with some of its key research projects; including providing information for its Million Dollar List of large-gift donors and developing a search function that helps generate important data for studies of giving in various regions of the country.
They will also create new knowledge that will help nonprofits raise more money and improve their operations, enabling them to provide more and better services. "One of our primary goals for the Ph.D. program is to develop a new generation of scholars whose groundbreaking research will directly aid nonprofits and donors," said Patrick Rooney, director of research at the Center on Philanthropy. "These graduates will make significant contributions to understanding philanthropy and strengthening nonprofits."
The Center plays a leading role in advancing such information in the U.S. Its faculty and staff conduct extensive, cutting-edge research on giving, volunteering and nonprofit management issues. Its signature research project, the Center on Philanthropy Panels Study of 8,000 households is the largest and most accurate study of charitable giving over time ever conducted, providing unprecedented insights into philanthropy.
